Commemoration of Professor Jos Weitenberg in Leiden

On the 18th of April a commemorative event was held at the Leiden Catholic Cemetery in honour of the 10th anniversary of Professor Jos Weitenberg’s death, founder of the Armenology tribune at Leiden University initiated by the Chairman of the Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Almelo Mr Onik Gelici. Ambassador Tigran Balayan attended the event along with the relatives of the famous scientist and representatives of Armenian community organizations.

After the wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of Jos Weitenberg, a memorial service was held in the church next to the cemetery, during which the speakers recalled Professor Weitenberg's contribution to Armenology, his scientific legacy and their interactions with the famous scientist.

In his speech Ambassador Balayan thanked for the initiative of the commemoration event, emphasizing the immense contribution of Jos Weitenberg in the development of Armenology in Europe and the world.

"It was an honour for me to know Professor Weitenberg personally. His boundless devotion to his profession, his loyalty to science, as well as the inexhaustible wealth of Armenianness that he spread around him, which was reflected in his active participation in the establishment of the International Association for Armenian Studies," the RA Ambassador said.

The Ambassador emphasized the significant involvement of Jos Weitenerg in the works of Armenian community structures throughout decades.

As a token of Professor Weitneberg's significant contribution and investment, Ambassador Balayan presented a commemorative medal to the widow of the scientist dedicated to the "30th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Armenia and the Netherlands".
